AA And US Airways On Brink Of Merger

American Airlines (AA) and US Airways could be just days away from announcing a long-awaiting merger, US news sources suggest. The combined worth of the two airlines has been estimated at $11bn, despite American Airlines falling under bankruptcy protection in November 2011, from which it has yet to emerge. The union would create a carrier larger than United and Delta and would create the last large tie-up of US airlines. The two carriers are thought to be meeting today to discuss the proposal, according to unconfirmed reports. It is believed that an agreement could be finalised within a week, after which US Airways’ CEO Doug Parker would become CEO of the merged carrier.
