Fraught Industrial Relations Persist At Qantas

Qantas has until Monday (March 10) to consider union proposals tabled in response to the airline’s announcement last week that it planned to cut 5,000 jobs in order to save A$2bn. The Australian Services Union wants to see the airline’s business plan and has asked Qantas to extend its timetable for voluntary layoffs. Qantas has already asked for 90 voluntary redundancies among 300 counter staff, a move the ASU has branded illegal. The airline rejected that claim and derided the ASU’s actions as “trial by media, trial by ambush”.
