David McMillan has been appointed to lead ICAO’s new task force examining how to mitigate the risks posed to commercial aviation by conflict zones. McMillan is the chair of the Flight Safety Foundation’s board and a former director general of Eurocontrol. The appointment came at the end of the first two-day meeting of the task force, which was formed in the wake of the downing of MH17. The group discussed possible ways for states to share information to provide more comprehensive risk assessments on conflict zones and proposals for the development of more detailed requirements relating to conflict zone warning criteria. “We’re looking for urgent, practical measures to address these new risks,” said McMillan. The task force is to meet again on August 25–26 and aims to publish its initial findings to the UN in October.
