Norwegian Argues For US Green Light

Norwegian Air International (NAI) says it has been backed by the European Commission (EC) in its quest to start low-cost flights to the US. Although the Open Skies agreement should allow automatically access to the US market, Norwegian’s opponents had claimed that it violated the “social provisions” of that agreement by operating under a “flag of convenience” in Ireland and hiring staff from Singapore. The EC, however, told US officials that it did not believe the social provisions could be used as a basis to deny access. NAI’s application for authority to fly to the US has been pending with the country’s department of transportation for almost six months.
