Tigerair, China Airlines Create Budget Carrier

Tigerair and China Airlines have signed a joint venture agreement to establish a new budget carrier, Tigerair Taiwan. The carrier, to be based in Taiwan, will have a paid-up capital of approximately $67m and will provide international flights in north-east Asia. It will be managed as a standalone entity, with its own board and management team, and operations are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2014. “The new JV will allow us to extend our presence into the new, untapped markets of Taiwan, Japan, and Korea,” said Tigerair group CEO Koay Peng Yen. “There is vast potential for growth in these markets and also areas of synergy to be explored between the two airlines.”
