A320neo LEAPs into flight

Another major milestone was hit in the A320neo programme yesterday (May 19) when the first aircraft powered by CFM International’s LEAP successfully completed its maiden flight.

The test flight came some eight months after the A320neo took its first flight powered by Pratt & Whitney’s PW1100G and marks the next stage in competition between the two powerplants.

Pratt & Whitney’s geared turbofan may be ahead in its test programme – notching up more than 400 flight hours and 130 flights since last September – it has not so far been able to match the CFM56’s successor in the orderbooks, with the LEAP-1A securing 55 per cent of the orders for which an engine selection has been made.
