BAE Prints Out-Of-Production Part

BAE Systems Regional Aircraft has designed and certified a 3D-printed part for its BAE 146 regional jet. The part is a plastic window breather pipe used as a vent to stop cabin windows misting up. The pipes were originally made by injection moulding in plastic, but the tooling that had been used by the supplier was no longer available. While new tooling would have required many months’ lead time, BAE was able to produce 3D-printed prototypes of the part within two weeks and secure commercial production shortly after. The 3D parts also cost 60 per cent less than the traditionally produced ones.
