CF6, CFM56 MRO Opportunities Increase for GA Telesis

The president of the Finnish engine MRO talks with Aviation Week about available slots and finding used serviceable material for these two popular engines.

GA Telesis Engine Services (GATES) is seeing an uptick in GE CF6-80C2 MRO. Two factors contributing to it are the engine’s number-four bearing compartment leakage issue and that the “Amazon platform has put some pressure" on the market, says Basil Papayoti, president of Helsinki-based GATES. “The CF6 market is very active.”

While the CF6 market is brisk, GATES, which added CFM56-7B MRO capability last year to its existing -5B services, has seen more CFM56 work so far this year, says Papayoti.

However, because “every major shop” for these powerplants is full, “that puts pressure on customers who are waiting and are not able to induct their engines,” he says. “It’s kind of a knife fight out there—especially for the CFMs.” This is the case whether a small or major airline is bidding, observes Papayoti.

Finding used serviceable material (USM) has been a bit harder than it used to be for these engines, but Papayoti says “we’re tough to beat for the CF6.” For the CFM56 engines, life-limited parts are in short supply because “everybody wants half life,” so their demand is driving up prices. “Our win rate is less for USM than what it used to be, but we’re not going to pay too high,” he says.

Looking forward to next year, he’s looking for a balanced split between CF6 and CFM56 MRO.

On Oct. 4, GATES signed a three-year TrueChoice material agreement with GE Aviation for CF6-80C2 serviceable OEM parts, repairs and technology upgrades. This is a follow-on three-year materials agreement between the companies announced in April 2014.
