The Future of Engine Maintenance

How robotics is revolutionising engine maintenance

Academics from the University of Nottingham and Harvard University recently presented new robotics that are ripe with potential.

Take the FLARE robots (affectionately called ‘snakes’), which wriggle their way through an engine like an endoscope, carrying out patch repairs to damaged thermal barrier coatings. Such robotic technologies are poised to improve engine maintenance. For example, by eliminating the need to remove an engine from an aircraft for MRO purposes, they speed up the inspection process.
