An original Geared Turbofan (GTF) will be on display for the first time at the 2014 ILA Berlin Air Show, courtesy MTU Aero Engines. The engine, a PurePower PW1500G, is the propulsion system for Bombardier’s CSeries aircraft, and is on loan from Pratt and Whitney. A geared turbofan can achieve up to 15% reduction in fuel burn – equivalent to a 15% decrease in CO2 emissions. It can also cut perceived noise levels in half. Five aircraft manufacturers have selected geared turbofans so far. Airbus has selected GTF for the A320neo, Bombardier for the CSeries, Irkut for the MS-21, Mitsubishi for the MRJ and Embraer for the latest E-Jets.
