The Science Behind Calm Emergency Evacuations

STG Aerospace researching new cabin lighting innovations.

A lot of research and science lie behind those luminescent strips passengers now see in many aircraft, aisles, but would only use in an emergency.

For example, last year STG Aerospace launched saf-Tglo blu, the first blue-glowing photo-luminescent floor-path marking system. The design was based on human-perception analysis, according to STG CEO Nigel Duncan.

“In low-level light conditions, our eyes use the more sensitive rod cones in order to see,” Duncan explains. “Rod cones have peak sensitivity in the blue-green region of the visible spectrum. While traditional green-glowing photo-luminescent products fall comfortably within the scotoptic [low-light vision] vision range, saf-Tglo blu has greater intensity within this responsive region.”

Saf-Tglo blu thus provides a more calming, professional and aesthetically pleasing safety solution. Needless to say, calming is exactly the quality airlines want in the only circumstance floor markings are used, that is in emergency evacuations.

The blue version of saf-Tglo has now been approved by FAA and EASA for the majority of Boeing, Airbus and Embraer aircraft, and has been retrofitted by several major airlines, including Icelandair. It will soon to be added to the options catalogue for major OEM programs.

More advances lie ahead. “STG is constantly innovating to simplify complex options that crowd the industry and create next-generation lighting,” Duncan stresses. At its Innovation and Engineering Center, STG has research scientists and development and testing facilities.

The company can design, develop, test and certify all of its products in-house. The CEO says that speeds time to market.

Duncan says the overall saf-Tglo line is the narrowest, lightest, highest-performing and most discrete floor-path marking system available on the market today. STG has extended its range beyond floor marking, developing a LED cabin light for retrofit on Boeing 737s and 757s.
