Semmco has opened a new office and manufacturing facility in Arlington, Texas to meet growing North American demand for its aviation maintenance solutions. According to the ground support equipment and aviation access platforms specialist, its objective for the new facility is to create a hub in the U.S. to fully service all local requirements for customers such as Air Canada, American Airlines and Delta.
Stuart McOnie, Semmco’s managing director, says the 18,000 ft.2 facility—which opened in January 2019—will offer product development, manufacturing and repairs for Semmco’s suite of products. He adds that the space selected has allowed Semmco to create a manufacturing environment bespoke to its requirements.
“Arlington is a central location in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, encompassing 13 counties in the state of Texas,” says McOnie. “We have fantastic access to key suppliers, prospective customers and airports, in addition to local universities and colleges to attract future young talent.”
To set up the new facility, Semmco chose a team of five from its UK headquarters to relocate to Texas. McOnie says that going forward, the Texas facility will be focused on recruiting local talent with the aim of hiring more than 10 new employees.
According to McOnie, awareness and appreciation toward employee safety in North America has grown along with demand for MRO equipment. Semmco’s product line includes a variety of lightweight, maneuverable access platforms with adjustable handrails for working at height. The facility will also manufacture the company’s SMART Nitrogen Trolley, SMART Charge and SMART Check products, which first debuted at MRO Americas 2018. McOnie says initial interest at the show contributed to Semmco’s decision to set up an American manufacturing facility. The company will be showcasing its products again this year at MRO Americas in Atlanta, April 9-11, 2019.
