Additive manufacturing company EOS and OEM MTU Aero Engines (MTU) have signed a new framework agreement to jointly develop quality assurance technologies for 3D printing processes.
The European firms have been collaborating for seven years examining how to assure the quality of metal engine components fabricated through additive manufacturing.
Following signing the new agreement, MTU and EOS revealed the first output from the joint venture: optical tomography (OT).
The OT system uses sensors and camera imaging to monitor and control the melting characteristics of materials and the exposure process.
EOS head of sales and marketing Adrian Keppler, said: “A very large proportion of the quality control process that previously took place downstream can now be performed during the manufacturing process, with a considerable saving in quality assurance costs.”
