GKN Aerospace has confirmed the qualification of a new main pilot windshield for A320 family aircraft which it said is 10 per cent lighter than previous versions.
GKN has worked with the Toulouse-based aircraft manufacturer on a design and certification programme for the windshield over a three-year period.
UK-headquartered GKN said it created the lighter windshield from chemically-toughened CE120 glass, which replaced the heavier, thermally-toughened glass of previous versions of the window.
It also said it has added design modifications that will extend the windshield’s performance and simplify its manufacture.
Gavin Wesson, senior vice-president of GKN Aerospace’s special products division, said as well as weight savings the windshield will also offer performance benefits to Airbus customers.
