Honeywell and Curtiss-Wright Corp. have partnered to develop a new generation of cockpit voice and flight-data recorders (CVR/FDR) that comply with an upcoming 25-hour CVR mandate and allow in-flight access to data.
The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has mandated that aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight of 27,000 kg (59,524 lbs.) and manufactured after Jan. 1, 2021 be fitted with CVRs having a minimum recording duration of 25 hrs. In the U.S., the National Transportation Safety Board also has recommended the FAA mandate 25-hour CVRs.
The new Honeywell Connected Recorder-25 (HCR-25) CVR and FDR will exceed EASA requirements, Honeywell said Feb. 7. Honeywell and Curtiss-Wright will jointly develop new CVR/FDR hardware, and Honeywell will upgrade software and provide server storage capability to support “black box in the sky” streaming of in-flight data.
Based on Curtiss-Wright’s recently certified Fortress 25-hour recorder, new HCR-25 recorders are designed as form-fit replacements for the Honeywell HFR-5 series CVR/FDRs, saving on installation time and cost. Honeywell plans to offer the new product as a standalone CVR, a standalone FDR or a combined CVR/FDR.
Curtiss-Wright will be the exclusive supplier of Honeywell’s new recorders for the air transport and business aviation markets.
“With the new regulatory requirement, we saw an opportunity to evolve our recorder technology to not only meet the conditions of governing agencies, but also make this product more powerful and better connected, providing aircraft operators with another source of data collection that can be used to improve aircraft maintenance and performance,” said Ben Driggs, Honeywell Aerospace president, services and connectivity.
