NextGen Goes Live In Houston

Airports in Houston yesterday (June 18) began using NextGen satellite technology to ensure more efficient flight paths into the city. The launch followed a 30-month project to integrate the technology undertaken by the FAA, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, the Houston Airport System, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines. The FAA developed 61 new procedures, including optimised profile descents, preferred departure and arrival paths and side-by-side arrival routes. The system is expected to reduce the distance flown by aircraft in the area by up to 648,000nm each year, saving three million gallons of fuel and cutting carbon emissions by as much as 31,000 tonnes.
