Rolls-Royce (RR) has partnered up with French OEM Liebherr-Aerospace to launch a company to manufacture gearboxes for the new Ultrafan engine.
The 50:50 joint venture (JV), will be located in Friedrichshafen, Germany and produce the power gear drive train components for the latest member of the Trent family.
RR said the gearbox will contribute to the efficiency of the UltraFan, which is expected to enter service in 2025 and offer a 25 per cent improvement on fuel burn compared with the first generation of Trent engines.
RR Germany will be responsible for the design of the gearbox and Liebherr-Aerospace will manufacture the components.
RR has already started construction of an €80m ($90m) test centre at its Dahlewitz site and expects it be operational in late 2016.
The build has been partly funded by the Brandenburg government.
