Sydney’s Airservices Upgrades Landing System

Airservices has begun its upgrade on the existing instrument landing system (ILS) that is installed on the main runway at Sydney Airport; the upgrade should enhance navigation for pilots during low visibility. ILS is a radio navigation aid that aims to support the movement of air traffic into the airport - particularly in fog and bad weather - improving accuracy and assurance for pilots. Work will begin at the end of March 2013. The ILS will allow the airport to introduce a category 2 landing service which enables pilot to approach the runway at a lower altitude compared to the current category 1.
